OVERVIEW:
OVERVIEW:
Our patients’ needs do not match the education we received. Most of us received a lot of information about mental health in our education programs, and little-to-no information on substance use disorder (addiction). Other clinicians received the opposite: Information on SUD but little on mental health. Our work, however, shows us that most clients with SUD have at least some mental health issues (especially if we include trauma-related disorders), and many clients with mental health issues have problems with SUD. This course provides an understanding of the interplay of mental health and SUD, focusing on assessment and appropriate interventions for your clients with co-occurring disorders.
OBJECTIVES:
OBJECTIVES:
• Explain the basic neurobiology of addictive chemicals
• Describe the signs and symptoms of substance intoxication, and distinguish withdrawal syndromes for each drug class
• Perform a clinical assessment to distinguish substance use disorder from other mental health disorders and inform the clinician’s choice of treatment interventions
• Understand the interaction between SUB and mental illness
• Analyze the various levels of substance use treatment, including medication-assisted therapies
• Utilize clinical strategies, such as motivational interviewing, to improve client engagement
